Epistle for September 2, 2008 2008-09-03 10:23:29
The Epistle for September 2nd, 2008, is now available. From Pastor Mark's Epistle:
PASTOR MARK’S EPISTLE
An Unusual “Labor Day”
Dear Friends,
Like most of you, I was looking forward to an
extra “Sabbath” of extra rest on Monday, September 1.
Well, God must have had something else in mind...
Sunday evening, Abraham Casborn called. You
may remember that after Katrina struck in 2005, St.
Luke’s stepped up and sponsored three families’ housing in
Memphis. Mr. Casborn, his wife Allison and their sons
Warren and Erron had evacuated away from Hurricane
Gustav in the New Orleans area. They drove for 14
hours, stayed for a night in Pine Bluff and made their way
to Memphis.
In a Spirit-led sequence of events, I was able to
arrange for them a place to stay, help them acquire some
toiletry items and have supper. We will see them again at
Wednesday dinner.
Meanwhile, a friend and I saw to the moving of
twenty plants to our property from across the street at
the former Church of Christ. Also, I was able to go see
Audrey Alley, whom I had missed at St. Francis over the
weekend.
As the day ended, part of me sighed “...some holiday!”
But a larger part of me shouted “what a great Labor
Day.” God needs and uses us on a different timetable from
our own. Our call is to be ready to do whatever is necessary
whenever, wherever, and it’s a Joy!!
In service, ...Pastor Mark
P.S. Don’t worry ... I’ll find a way to get a “day off”...

Praying in Color Coming to St. Luke's on September 27th! 2008-08-20 19:52:08
Praying in Color is an active and meditative prayer practice for the word-weary and fidgety prayer. It is both a process and a product. The process uses pen, paper, and markers to create a time of stillness and listening. The product is a prayer drawing or icon - a visual reminder to continue to pray throughout the day.
Absolutely no artistic ability is necessary! The workshop is based on the book of the same title: Praying in Color—Drawing a New Path to God by Sybil MacBeth (2007). Check out her website: www.prayingincolor.com
Sybil MacBeth is a mathematics instructor, a dancer, and a doodler. She lives in Midtown with her husband Andy who is an Episcopal priest.
When: Saturday, September 27, 8:30AM-1:30PM
Where: St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 480 S. Highland, Memphis TN 38111
Cost: $25 (includes supplies and lunch)
Praying in Color(tm): It’s a book; it’s a prayer practice; it’s a workshop! Don't miss it!
